ok so we can all agree that soa is a show about manlove there is lots of man hugging and “i love you brother” and all that shit
but like right from the getgo in s1, juice is never ever a part of that, he doesn’t get the manlove and man hugging he just sort of is there watching
i just am confused, like, is he a son or is he not
He’s most definitely an outsider and it’s really sad.
The only other member to give him an inkling of respect prior to season 5 was Chibs. Then, Clay takes over the role of giving a shit about Juice, but only because Juice has stepped up and taken on the role of prospect lackey. I mean doing dishes, helping him move his stuff, etc - that’s prospect shit. I get Juice is concerned about Clay and is helping him as a friend, but even still, Juice is the only Son we see doing menial shit like that.
Season 2, when Juice is shanked in prison, we see the guys watch Juice move through the white supremacist group and they do nothing. Juice gets shanked, Jax is the only one to move; the rest of the group is seconds behind.
The guys get out of prison and Juice is transferred to a regular hospital. The only time any of them come to visit him is to get his proxy for Jax to leave. We know this because Juice plainly says “I’ve missed you guys”, indicating (to me at least) he hasn’t seen them since he was shanked. I mean, c’mon, can’t you send your brother a card? Send a prospect to watch over him?
Season 3, he gets beat up by the Mexican gang. Piney and Bobby show some sympathy toward him, but the rest of the group calls him an “idiot” and a “moron”, as if he could do anything different. As if he could fight off four guys in a cramped van pinned down.
Season 4, it takes nearly all damn season of him being messed up and “off” for Chibs to finally take interest in his life. And that really only happened AFTER Chibs found out Juice tried to kill himself. I mean, they had the whole conversation in the warehouse in which Juice asked how Chibs felt about the “no blacks” rule. Would it have REALLY killed Chibs to go a step further and ask, “Hey, why are you bringing this up? Why are you talking about breaking rules here?”
And he finds out Juice hung himself. Again, calling him an idiot and a coward, then handing him over to Jax. Doesn’t stop to ask, “hey, buddy, why’d you hang yourself? Are you okay?” No, Chibs doesn’t bother to ask until Juice has a full on meltdown in front of him in the bathroom. And Jax? Never checks up on Juice again. You’d think if you had a suicidal friend, you’d stop and ask, “Hey, you still okay?” Not. Once.
Season 5, none of the guys give Juice a chance to explain his actions in Season 4. They brush off his suicide attempt and subsequent relationship with the feds as him being an idiot. Because, how was Juice supposed to know the people he considered his family weren’t racist pricks who’d throw him out, beat him, or kill him if he admitted he was half-black? They only have a “no blacks” rule, use racist language, and Chibs himself said rules can’t be broken. But Juice is just an idiot! Juice should’ve known better based on approximately ZERO indications the club wouldn’t hurt him in some way!
So then Jax uses Juice as a pawn against Clay. And Jax screws it up. Not Juice, Jax. Because honestly, what was Juice supposed to do with Clay? Just tail around him while the Club President is kidnapped? No. If Jax was smart, he would’ve had Juice remove the documents and put them somewhere else. But instead, the blame falls squarely on Juice’s shoulders.
And is there a moment of compassion for him from Chibs or Bobby? Of course not! They shove him out the door without a second thought. Because fuck Juice, he’s an idiot, always screwing everything up. They don’t think about how Jax was a moron all along, that the evidence would ALWAYS look planted. Having Juice or Jax go directly to the evidence and saying “AHA” looks suspicious no matter what and there would’ve been ZERO proof it wasn’t planted beforehand.
So yeah, Juice isn’t part of the club.
He loves them, desperately wants to be in, but is constantly and consistently shut out. I mean, Gemma even says in season 1, “that guy isn’t used to a lot of good feedback.”
Oh, so he cleared Clay of criminal charges by hacking into the police database, but that’s not “cool” enough? Or… what? This is a guy who has the capability to access a LOT of confidential information through hacking. Who else can do that? Who else knows how to work computers in the club? Do they think it’s not important?
But I think the distinction is important because Juice really isn’t one of them. At all. He has compassion, he has decency, he has his humanity. He KNOWS the things he’s doing is wrong. He feels GUILT and REMORSE for his actions. That’s something a lot of those guys lack - especially Jax in season 5.
So yeah… sorry for the essay, but Juice is my favorite. <3
